Rekey or change locks

Should you rekey or change your locks?

Rekeying is usually right when the lock works but old keys should stop working. Changing locks is better when the hardware is damaged, worn, low quality, mismatched, or you want a different style or security level.

When rekeying makes sense

Rekey after a move, roommate change, employee change, tenant turnover, lost key, or any time you are not sure who has a copy. Rekeying keeps compatible hardware in place and changes the working key.

When replacement makes sense

Replace the lock if the deadbolt drags, the cylinder is loose, the latch misses, the finish is failing, the hardware is cheap, or you want a keypad or smart lock.
